For an improved smile and correction of overcrowded teeth, braces are a useful orthodontic treatment. In order for the procedure to succeed, however, patients must be aware that braces require an extra level of care. If you have an appointment scheduled at Abundant Dental for braces application, your Utah dentist will discuss the procedure details with you. Our general aftercare recommendations are as follow:

• Check Wire Ends - After applying your braces, we will check for any exposed wire that may injure your mouth. If you notice any sharp ends we missed, or a wire becomes loose, schedule an appointment to have the wires adjusted. You will be provided with a soft silicone gel that you can apply to rough edges.
• Clean Properly - We will provide you with the proper supplies to clean your braces. It is important to remember that braces need extra care. You will need to brush after every single meal and floss at least once daily. It's also best to avoid candy and hard or sticky foods.
• Manage Pain - After the initial application, your gums and teeth may be sore. Pain can be managed with over the counter painkillers and warm salt water rinses.
• Protect Your Mouth - If you play contact sports or an instrument, you may need to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth. Your Utah dentist will discuss any additional steps, such as headgear, retainers, or elastics.
