Porcelain veneers can immediately transform an individual’s smile. They are thin shells of custom medical-grade ceramic that are attached to the front portion of the teeth. This procedure is incredibly popular because of how natural they look and are used in a wide range of cosmetic correction from teeth whitening to orthodontic adjustment. Individually crafted for each patient, these cosmetic enhancements are made from an advanced material that closely resembles the appearance of natural dental enamel.
Prosthodontist or a cosmetic dentist both specialize in creating devices or prosthetics that enhance the beauty and functionality of the tooth. A veneer, after all, can be thought of as a type of dental prosthetic.
Prior to the procedure, you’ll need to have a consultation with your dentist. The dentist will take an x-ray of the affected teeth and with either have you come back at a later date or start the procedure while you are there.
You’ll return to the dentist’s office when the veneer has been delivered. The dentist then checks it to make sure it corresponds to the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth. Then, the dentist cleans your tooth and abrades the surface so the veneer can better adhere to it. The dentist then places the veneer to your tooth with a special type of cement. They use a special kind of ultraviolet light to help it to cure quickly and remove the excess dental cement. The dentist will then check the alignment of your bite and make tiny adjustments until the veneer is perfectly placed. You’ll return to the dentist for a follow-up appointment a couple of weeks after your veneer has been placed.
Recovery
There is really no downtime with a veneer. You should brush and floss your teeth as you usually would. Some people claim that the veneer made their tooth more sensitive to hot and cold. This is a side effect that usually goes away in the days after the procedure. Even if it does not completely go away, tooth sensitivity can be managed.
Pros and Cons of Veneers
A veneer restores a beautiful and welcoming smile, and it much more stain-resistant than a natural tooth. There are a few drawbacks, however. Though they can be made out of resin composite materials that are not that pricey, a resin composite veneer does not last as long or look as natural as one made out of porcelain. Porcelain is a type of ceramic fired at very high temperatures to make it very strong and non-porous.
A dental veneer is also permanent and is difficult to fix if it is ever broken. However, a porcelain veneer can last a decade or longer.
